Whether it's a weekend on Fraser's sand tracks or a long run out west, most 4WD trips that go wrong come down to three things: a flat battery, the wrong tyre pressures, or not being able to fix a small problem far from help. Here's a practical checklist to cover the basics before you hit the dirt.
1. Tyres: the right pressure for the terrain
Letting your tyres down for sand, mud or corrugations improves traction, reduces the chance of getting bogged and gives a smoother ride. Pumping them back up before you return to the bitumen is just as important.
- A rapid tyre deflator with gauge lets you drop all four tyres quickly and accurately.
- A portable tyre inflator gets you back to road pressure without hunting for a servo air hose.
- Always follow your vehicle and tyre manufacturer's recommendations, and drive to the conditions when running lower pressures.
2. Power: never get stranded by a flat battery
Running fridges, lights and chargers at camp drains batteries fast. 3. Keep the cabin and cargo organised

4. The basics every 4WD should carry
- Rated recovery points and appropriate recovery gear – and the know-how to use them safely.

- A first aid kit and a way to call for help where there's no mobile coverage.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
5. Before you leave home
